Electrical Distribution System Assessment & Rehabilitation

Client: Coalition Provisional Authority
Location: Port of Umm Qasr, Iraq
Status: Completed February 2006

NANA Pacific was tasked with the overall site assessment, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the electrical distribution system at the Port of Umm Qasr in Iraq. This project was completed in several phases.

A site assessment was completed for a 33kV/11kV/400V infrastructure consisting of ten substations that provide power throughout the port. Based on this evaluation, NANA Pacific was tasked with rebuilding an 11kV, 2000A substation to provide improved, reliable, and maintainable power to the existing ZPMC dock cranes. In addition, all electrical distribution was replaced in five large dock warehouses, including specifically designed military security lighting in the area. A portable, temporary 11kV substation was designed, built, and installed to provide uninterrupted electrical service to the ZPMC cranes and other critical loads while rebuilding tasks were completed.

The substation rebuild called for installation of new 11kV switchgear with a modern digital relay control system, 1 MVA transformers, 400V MDP, and all station service equipment including fire detection, HVAC, and lights. An integral ground fault detection/suppression system for the port was designed and installed and several 500 kVA feeders replaced. Complete as-built drawings, commissioning reports, and Operations and Maintenance Manuals were also developed for the client.
